Capacity Building Workshops
Foundation Level II – Build Teachers’ Skill Level Capacity*
Our second level is Building Teachers Skill Level Capacity, focusing on classroom instruction through a series of workshops. Level two emphasizes the how-to of the instructional strategies and activities. In this tier, educators are provided with specific, detailed instruction on how to infuse the Culture and Linguistically Responsive (CLR) pedagogies on a day-to-day basis. Although culturally and linguistically responsive teaching is not a curriculum, there are steps classroom teachers can take each day to impact learning for their Standard English Learners or underserved students. Delivered by the real experts, classroom teachers with a practitioner’s focus, each of these workshops ranges from 90 minutes to 4 hours or can be combined into full days of training.
Focusing on the Latino Student as a Standard English Learner
This workshop is a complement to the foundational piece for participants to gain more clarity in distinguishing Mexican American student from Central Americans and South American students. In addition these questions will be answered. What are the cultural and linguistic needs of the Mexican American student in comparison to these other populations. What instructional strategies work best for these students as Standard English Learners?
Culturally Responsive Standardized Test Preparation
Standardized test prep does not have to be boring. Teachers will learn how to engage the students in test prep in an interesting, relevant way. Workshop can include a school assembly and bonus CD with music video, comic book, and images of students.
Creating A Critical Friends Group For Sustaining Culturally Responsive Teaching and Learning
How to sustain the work once the professional development has ended? How do you have culturally responsive cadre members engaged in the process of ongoing learning? We can show you how through our critical friends group which focuses on review of research, collaborative lesson planning, peer coaching, and analysis of student work. This workshop will train cadre members how to begin and sustain a community of learners centered- around CLR.
Creating An Learning Environment that Invites Success for all Students
We call it re-imaging the school, creating an environment that is responsive to those students who do not see themselves in the environment of the school. This session covers basic elements of environmental changes, including hallways, classrooms, and offices.
Mainstream English Language Development
This workshop is an introduction to Mainstream English Language development or MELD strategies (includes a MELD make-n-take). Closely aligned to English Learner Strategies, teachers will learn how to apply second language methodology with Standard English Learners. Variations of this workshop include focus on the linguistic features of non-standard languages.
Culturally Responsive Mathematics and/or Science
What does it mean to be culturally and linguistically responsive while teaching mathematics and science? Teachers learn from practicing math and science teachers how to infuse culturally responsive pedagogy into these content areas.
Culturally Responsive Classroom Management
Character development for our youngsters is universal and it can be culturally and youth responsive. Using the principles of MAAT as the foundation and cartoon characters, called the Scribes, this workshop orientates participants to the Righteous program. The program focuses on life skills like order, balance, harmony, and truth to name a few.
