Cadre Model of School-Site Support

The Center promotes the concept of "critical friends" groups through the use of small cadres of school-site teachers. Participating schools are encouraged to enlist at least two teachers from each of the different grade levels or subject areas. These teachers, in turn, serve as coaches throughout the school.

Each cadre of teachers works collaboratively to build and demonstrate lessons, coach each other, and gain knowledge through an examination of professional literature selections. Each activity is designed to reinforce the five foundations of student success.

Five foundations of student success:

1 Standards-based Teaching with Culturally Responsive Literature

2 Systematic Teaching of Situational Appropriateness (Code switching)

3 Building on Cultural Behaviors to Build Positive Classroom Communities

4 Expansion of Academic Vocabulary using Conceptually-Coded Words

5 Creating and Inviting Learning Environment for Student Success

Progress in moving from traditional instruction to a CLR approach can be measured. Cadre members also benefit from our benchmarks for culturally and linguistically responsive teaching. Teachers use the benchmarks to gauge their own success in adopting CLR strategies in their own classrooms.
