Dr. Sharroky Hollie

Sharroky Hollie, Ph.D.

Dr. Sharroky Hollie has nearly years 20 of experience in education ranging from the elementary level to the university level. As a classroom teacher, Sharroky taught English/Language Arts at Charles Drew Middle School in Los Angeles and Francis Polytechnic High School in Arleta. He has also taught English Composition and American Literature at the community college level. Currently, he is an assistant California State Dominguez Hills, Professor Hollie, preparing teachers to serve in urban schools. He teaches classroom management, methodology, and secondary literacy and learning.

Dr. Hollie experiences well extend beyond the classroom as well. He worked as a Program Coordinator for the Academic English Mastery Program in the Los Angeles Unified School District. In that capacity, he was responsible for professional development and curriculum development for teachers working with Standard English Learners in underserved schools. Sharroky also is co-founder and executive director for the Center for Culturally Responsive Teaching and Learning (CCRTL), a non-profit organization dedicated to providing high quality professional development to educators serving African and Mexican students. The Center works with school districts throughout the country. Dr. Hollie has trained over 10,000 teachers and observed in approximately 1000 classrooms over the past 8 years.

In Fall 2003, Sharroky and two colleagues founded the Culture and Language Academy of Success (CLAS), a K-8 elementary charter school (www.cultureandlanguage.org) that is based on culturally and linguistically responsive pedagogy. At CLAS, Dr. Hollie is the instructional advocate, responsible for the curriculum, professional development, and teacher support.

His research interests are the language and literacy development for Standard English Learners, culturally responsive teaching, professional development for educators, and teacher development. Dr. Hollie was a visiting professor in literacy and diversity in the fall of 2007 at Webster University in St. Louis. Sharroky was recently published in Teaching African American Learners to Read, an International Reading Association publication edited by Mary Hoover and Bill Hammond (2005) and the anthology, Talkin Black Talk, edited by John Baugh and H. Samy Alim (Teachers College Press in 2007).
